Project summary

The Digital Publications team at Atlas Copco IAS UK creates documentation for training, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of self-pierce rivets and tooling systems. Tasked with modernizing their manuals and information delivery, the team explored innovative solutions like augmented reality, discovering that My AR Studio could be a valuable asset.

The team

Atlas Copco is a Global Company covering a wide range of industries and technologies.

We are part of the Product Company based in Deeside, manufacturing self-pierce rivets and tooling systems, largely for the automotive industry but we also supply many other smaller industries too.

We are part of the Digital Publications team and are responsible for creating documentation for the training, installation, commissioning and maintenance purposes of our tooling systems which are used by both our internal service engineers and our customers.

The challenge

As a department we were challenged with finding new and innovative ways to modernise our manuals and the way the deliver information. We explored the use of augmented reality and found that My AR Studio could be a valuable asset.

Our objective was to create a Product Support Portal where all this information could be accessed alongside 3D models which the user could view and interact with, to be used in conjunction with the documentation to assist with training, maintenance etc. Our models were uploaded to a Share Point site to a Preventative Maintenance page where users can access both the documentation and the 3D model to assist with their maintenance tasks.

The solution

The ability to add Hot Spots to our models allowed us to convey information, labels and links, which allowed us to provide clear information and instructions. Hot Spots are one of our favourite features from My AR Studio as well as the ability for our users to view our models in their space. Not only is this extremely impressive, but also allows our users across the world to view our tools by simply using their phones.

In order to export our models into MyAR Studio we used our pre-existing models provided by our design engineers in Solid Edge and brought them into Keyshot where we are able to add materials and textures, these models were then exported into My AR Studio as GLB files.

The future

In the future we hope to further utilise My AR Studio as we continue to improve and modernise the way we deliver information and instructions, the feedback we have had from our colleagues across the world has been extremely positive, and as a result other teams in our company are now looking how they can potentially use My AR Studio.

The experience

Our overall experience with My AR Studio has been excellent, the team have been exceptionally supportive with providing training and answering all our queries and questions. We would therefore most definitely recommend them to other companies.
